Did you know that 1 in 3 children under the age of 15 die every day as a result of road accidents? There are approximately 13,800 deaths every year and by educating children about road safety we can reduce these fatalities through focused education.
Active Education’s Scholar Patrol project is run in conjunction with Regent Insurance, the Department of Basic Education and the Road Traffic Management Corporation, and together they reinstate and train learners and teachers in basic road safety. Zebra crossings are refurbished, and the Scholar Patrol teams are provided with reflective bibs, caps and signage.
I was privileged to be a part of this heart-warming initiative earlier in August. My day started at 03:45, and together with several thought leaders in the entertainment space, including the likes of LeAnne Dlamini, Loyiso Bala, Graeme Watkins, Time Reece and Katlego Maboe, we made our way to at Siphiwe Primary School in Tembisa. These celebrities leant their voices to this initiative to ensure our children reach their classrooms safely, and provided a fun and engaging show with impromptu performances. It was also the first time I was part of an event that trended on Twitter! #RegentScholarPatrol #EducationMeansEverything
The below video will hit you right in the feels, and give you a birds eye view of our experience at Siphiwe Primary.
