In February this year I photographed the newly refurbished luxury rooms at Arathusa Safari Lodge in the Sabi Sand Reserve, adjacent the unfenced Kruger Park.

Despite the drought at the time, there was no shortage of wildlife. In fact, the animals flocked around what remained of the once enormous water hole that the lodge is built around, as most of the other water holes had long since dried up.

I saw herds of elephant, hippo, hyena, giraffe, waterbuck, impala, warthog and several hornbills, and that was all without even going on a safari drive! One evening I had to delay going to sleep, as there was a hippo merrily grazing outside my bedroom!
