Hot Air Balloon Ride: Aerial Photography

In February I was blessed with an invitation for a sunrise hot air balloon ride with Woman & Home magazine – something that’s been at the top of my bucket list for ages!

Jani and I stayed over at the lovely Valley Lodge in Magaliesburg the night before, and got up at 04h15 to get ready for our epic adventure!

The gas flames add a comforting warmth to the crisp morning air

Take off was not what I was expecting – the basket gently lifts off the ground without a single bump or even a rustle in the grass, and you’re overcome with a sense of weightlessness as you slowly drift upwards and onwards.

The morning air is completely still, and sounds on the ground are amplified. You can hear people talking down below, dishes clanking, and the sounds of the morning starting up with crystal clarity.

People below are delighted by the colourful majestic beauty up above, and rush out with their mobile phones. One truck driver even pulled off next to the road to get photos to show his family and friends later that day.

Floating through the landscape at the speed on the wind, you notice patterns and beauty all around you.

After an hour and fifteen minutes, our flight had sadly come to an end, but the most exciting part was still to come – the landing! Our pilot Bill spotted an appropriate landing area – right behind a farm worker’s small, dilapidated house. Silently cruising in, the stunned family came out to watch as the enormous balloon descended upon their back yard.

Me – still in Cloud 9!

After our balloon ride and champagne breakfast, Jani and I were treated to massages at the spa. Did I mention I love my job?

All images were shot on a Canon 5D mark iii and iPhone using the Hipstamatic app.

I love the ‘orbs’ in the fourth image – spirits going on the ride with you… :-)

Actually it’s lens flare but I’ll go with spirits ;)
