Styled Décor Photography: Woman & Home Magazine Summer Edition

Being a commercial photographer means being able to work in different conditions, and still making the best out of any bad situation.

The Woman & Home Magazine summer styled décor photo shoot was one of those times. If you stay in Johannesburg, you may remember the hailstorm of epic proportions and several days of heavy rain in early September? Well, that was when we photographed the outdoor summer entertaining ideas at Shepstone Gardens!

Despite the wind, rain and hail, the images had to convey a summery feeling. Nature wasn’t playing along, so I needed to manipulate the light to make it look like summer. Using several studio lights, I blasted raw, undiffused light from a high vantage point to create fake sunlight.

The rain was tricky though. Several times we had to break down the set, get all the furniture and props inside, wait for the rain to subside, take everything back out, re-do the styling, only for it to start raining again! My camera and lights were all wrapped in bubble wrap, and each light had an assistant to hold it down with the frequent sudden gusts of wind.

A special thanks to my client Jani for her great sense of humour at the shoot and for keeping our spirits up, the three assistants, Sam, Suzi and an intern, and the two strong men, Werner and my hubby Julian, for doing all the heavy lifting! I couldn’t have done the shoot without you guys!

I recall this shoot vividly.
We all went home looking like bedraggled birds feeling sorry for ourselves!
The photos came out beautifully though and the spread is absolutely stunning!
Thank you for a wonderful few months shooting with you as Jani’s (my liefie) assistant.
I hope to see you again soon!

I love this! I also love the fact that you can turn a ‘bad’ situation around and make it work for you! The pics are fresh and bright and the bunting is just awesome!

Oh what fun! The nightmares of mud everywhere have returned… I was so relieved that nothing got damaged in the shoot. It’s always a worry. But well done to everyone involved – great success!

hahaha! I forgot about all the mud and large pools of water!
