I was recently commissioned by The African Union Commission and the World Food Programme, to photograph a series of conferences for the African Risk Capacity, held over several days in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The objective was to capture the ambiance and details of the conferences. In order to blend in and not disturb the delegates, I did not use flash or any artificial lighting, and I used a 70-200mm lens, so I could capture the action without being in the way.
Part of the brief was to take a group photo of the delegates from all over Africa, print a copy per person, and deliver them the following morning. Arranging 80 plus people, of which around half do not speak English, was pretty challenging! To ensure everyone’s faces were correctly lit, I used studio lights with a remote trigger.
