Tutorial: How to get two different photos from the same scene

I was recently commissioned to do an industrial photo shoot, and to take photos of the products and the factory. The client specifically wanted “arty” shots, and images with shallow depth of field.

The below two images were shot of the same scene, taken from the same vantage point. For the first image, I set my camera on Aperture priority, and used an f/stop of f/4, and focused on the products to the left of the foreground. For the second image, I focused on the cables in the background, and used an f/stop of f/8, so the products in the foreground were out of focus, but still recognizable.
