A handmade gift idea for Mothers Day

For Mothers Day next Sunday, I decided to make handmade photo journals for my Mom & Mom-in-law, with photos I took on a recent trip to Hong Kong with my Mom.

Making a photo journal is really easy, only takes a couple of hours, and the end result is so rewarding! Here’s a tutorial so you can make your own photo journals to spoil your Mom this Mothers Day.

You will need:

1. Scrap paper

2. Two original photos for the front & back covers

3. Wood glue

4. An old paintbrush

5. A strip of brown paper for the spine

6. Scissors

7. Clothing pegs

8. A couple of heavy books

Instructions:

1. Cut the scrap paper to the size of the photos you are using for the covers

2. Tap the pile of paper on a table top so it forms a neat stack

3. Place the clothing pegs at each end of the stack to keep it together

4. Use the books to prop up your stack of paper, and apply wood glue to the spine of the photo journal. Spread it out evenly with your paintbrush

5. Once the glue begins to dry, add a second & third coat, and allow to dry completely

6. Cut a strip of brown paper to cover the spine of the photo journal, and carefully stick this on

7. Use the heavy books to press the photo journals

I personalised the photo journals with punch label gun name tags, but you could even cut letters out of magazines to spell out your Mom’s name.

Mom, if you’re reading this, please act surprised when you receive your photo journal next Sunday! ;-)

Thanks Heather! It’s so much fun, and it turns out really well. I was surprised at how effectively the glue binds the paper together.

Thanks Wes! Munchkin loves helping me with crafts, but most of all he loves sitting on paper, paper with glue on! :-)

Thank you Angel, for my beautiful journal. I love the gifts you make me because I know how much work you’ve put into them. The scrap paper you put into the journal is exquisite. And I love that it’s personalised… thank you – you made my Mother’s Day really special – for the 29th time!
