With Christmas just around the corner, I have been sourcing ideas to make gift bags for my clients, family and friends this December.
I found this idea on my new favourite blog, How About Orange, and was amazed at how easy the bags are to make, and doubly delighted with the final product!
You will need:
1. An envelope (I used an A5 envelope, but any size would do. The bigger the envelope, the bigger the gift bag will be)
2. Decorative Tape
3. Scissors
Step 1: Seal the envelope, and then cut off one of the side edges.
Step 2: Wrap the tape around the envelope, starting at the opening you just cut. Alternate with different tapes, until you get an inch from the bottom.
Step 3: Fold the bottom inch upwards, scoring the fold with your finger nail. Fold in an inch on both sides, scoring the folds. Now flip the envelope over, and refold all three sides, scoring each fold with your nail.
Step 4: Put one hand into the envelope, and pop out the sides. With the other hand, push the bottom down. This will make the corners pop up into triangles. Score the triangles with your finger nail, and then fold then down.
Step 5: Cover the bottom of the bag with more tape.
Step 6: Fold the middle of the sides inwards, and the top inch of the bag over. To keep it closed, punch a single hole into the middle, while the top flap is closed.
Step 7: Insert the pressie into the bag, fold over the top inch, and tie on hand made tags.
These bags are so pretty it’s a sin not to reuse them! I recommend writing a note inside the bag, asking the receiver of the gift, to reuse the gift bag for someone special. Hopefully the bag will get used a few times, making many people smile!

Hi Rikki – just LOVE this! Where did you get the decorative tape from?

Thanks Lauren! I got my tape in Hong Kong, but I have seem it locally at the scrap booking and craft shops.
Fantastic! I can’t stand the gift bags you find in shops.
What a great idea! I love it. Perhaps I can do something organic with brown envelopes – just adding some guinea fowl feathers and quills. Thanks!
Looks fabulous. Now a reason to buy some decorative tape!
It looks brilliant but the folding and sticking is way beyond me. God, I’m such a dumb accountant x
Ha ha ha! Barbs, you’re Ms Srapbooking Deluxe! Perhaps cover your tube with a Balance Sheet and then it’ll work out? xxx
